College students frequently neglect good nutrition and healthy eating habits.

As their schedules become hectic with papers and exams, students are more likely to eat poorly.

Below are a few suggestions to keep you eating healthy, even with the busiest schedule.

* Eat breakfast. Not only will this help you concentrate better in your classes; eating breakfast will help you from overeating later on in the day.

* Skip the fries and chips. Although it is tempting to order fries and chips on the side, this adds empty calories, and over the course of the semester can add up to hundreds of extra calories and unwanted pounds.

* Portion control. A serving is a lot smaller than most people think.

For example, a serving of protein is equivalent to the size of a deck of cards, one slice of bread or half of a cup of cooked cereal, rice or pasta equals one serving.

* Eat more fiber. Foods rich in fiber not only have significant health benefits, but also help you feel fuller, longer.

So add some chickpeas to a salad or choose whole-wheat breads over white bread.

* Keep healthy snacks on hand. Keep low-fat yogurt, carrot sticks, or an apple tucked in your backpack.

That way, when hunger strikes you can reach for these snacks instead of heading to the vending machine.

*Drink plenty of fluids. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Eight 8-oz glasses of water per day is recommended. If water is not your thing, try flavored seltzer.

Limit the amount of soda and fruit juices, which are both high in sugar and calories.

* Use mustard instead of mayonnaise. This will significantly reduce the amount of fat and calories in your sandwich.

* Treat yourself. Remember it is okay to eat cookies, ice cream, fries, etc in moderation.

Depriving yourself may only lead to total loss of control and over consumption of the forbidden food! So when a chocolate craving strikes, enjoy!
