Statement from The Montclarion
Bobby Melok
Issue date: 10/28/08 Section: Opinion
In the October 23, 2008 issue of The Montclarion, a syndicated cartoon entitled "The K Chronicles" was printed. The cartoon featured a satirical reference to a controversial racial slur, obstructing the full word with the edges of the panel.
"The K Chronicles" is provided to The Montclarion by MCT Campus, a service that provides syndicated comics, graphics, crossword puzzles and pictures, among other things, to campus newspapers nationwide.
In this event, The Montclarion relied on others to judge content appropriateness, rather than making this choice as a staff decision.
Many of you have voiced your displeasure with this cartoon, as is your right.
It is never The Montclarion's intention to offend its readership, and we sincerely apologize to all who were upset with this comic.
The Montclarion recognizes and appreciates the campus community's diversity and strives to provide a newspaper that respects and honors all viewpoints.
Action has been taken to ensure that all content from this point forward will be sensitive to the diversity of The Montclarion's readership.

As an MSU alumnus, I am not only disgusted and outraged by the recent "syndicated cartoon" but I am equally as disgusted and outraged by the Montclarion organization and its staff. (Continued…)

You're making a big deal out of nothing. It was a joke and many found it funny, and many not so much, but get over it. If a cartoon is this big an issue, you need to get out of your dorm or house because then you will find real reasons to feel "disgusted" or "scarred. (Continued…)

I went to college in the 1970's and all I can say is you "students" of today are going backwards in progress. What I mean is that all people should be free to communicate and offend away all they please. (Continued…)

What kind of an education did Melissa get at Montclair if she doesn't know that she is an "alumna?" "Alumnus" is the singular, masculine form for a graduate. (Continued…)

If I may ask, what exactly is this cartoonist trying to imply? I'm seeing this as an attempt to bring racism to the election. Sort of make racism a hot topic worthy of discussion or something. (Continued…)

Most of you have taken the time to comment say
"It's just a joke"
"laugh a little"
LAUGH AT WHAT? Laugh at Ignorance?? Clearly that's what you are saying. (Continued…)

I agree that the cartoon may be ignorant, however you should not make the same choice and be ignorant by not tolerating a diverse viewpoint.
And you simply can not ask an African-American anything, because there is no such person. (Continued…)

Bottom line is to be open minded and diverse. Let others express as they desire. You don't have to agree with everyone. That's not even usually possible. (Continued…)

This cartoon may have offended some people, but the cartoon was a satirical view of white people and I think maybe Obama supporters. The whites using the N word, yet still voting for him because they are swept up in Obama Mania. (Continued…)
